I LOVE Gene Kelly and I LOVE this song. PERFECT COMBINATION. Too bad I'm a couple decades too late to have my shot with Gene. Oh well. I get to sit home all afternoon and swoon as he dances effortlessly across my computer screen! lol.

I'm telling you. the ballet is the best part! Gene does his Wigglebutt Dance (in a white bodysuit! swoon. the dance on the fountain with Leslie many other it's just plain beautiful. Oscar Levant is in it too. and he's. I dunno. priceless? yes, that's the word! I was born in ' it's obviously not just for adults. I know many, many kids that love this movie, and tons of adults. So, I hope you get or rent or love this movie or something, cuz it's the best.

Even though it was shot on a sound stage at MGM Studios in southern California, An American in Paris is a wonderful tribute to the immortal city that is Paris, France. The sets are obviously fake, but the characters and dance evoke such emotion that it doesn't matter if it looks real, rather that it feels real. Gene Kelly is wonderful, of course, as Jerry Mulligan, a painter in Paris who becomes the companion of a rich, American socialite who wants to make him a big-time painter in Paris. She wants more than just his work, however, but Jerry falls for Lise, played by Leslie Caron. They each have their secrets, but they don't let that keep from seeing each other. Oscar Levant plays Jerry's depressed pianist friend still trying to make a huge breakthrough and Georges Guetary plays a French singer with a part to play in all of this. Here, what is most important, as with most Gene Kelly musicals, is the dancing. And there is plenty of it. Everything leads up to the final 18 minute sequence that does drag on a bit too long, but still is gorgeous to look at. If there is anything to take from this musical, it is the final dance number. It is every bit memorable as one has ever been filmed. Overall, this film shines with love; for its characters and of course Paris.

I dare say even the Vienna Philharmonic were amazed at the Dude's energy and command of this music that they've played a thousand times. I enjoyed EVERY second of it. Supposedly, it was the music for 2001 that inspired the type of music George Lucas wanted for Star Wars. Egy amerikai parizsban musical broadway. I like this musical. The art direction is first-rate; not surprising with Minnelli as director. "Stairway to Paradise" is my favorite number because it emanates from a stage number, not from forced emotions. The ballet is overblown, unfortunately, which leads me to my main criticism of this film- the lack of soul or spirit. Gene Kelly movies were as good as you will find if you are looking for a happy, feel good classic. The only sadness involved in these movies is that they had to end and that their magical era has gone by. #Hollywood s Golden Era.
